If we ever shut down, you lose nothing.
You're trusting Lyfos with things that must outlive any company — including this one. So here is the question nobody likes to ask, answered in writing: what happens to your vault if Lyfos dies before you do?
The five commitments.
- Your vault never depends on our servers to be read. It is encrypted on your device and stored on your device. Even with every Lyfos server gone, your vault opens with your passphrase — today, in ten years, always.
- Your export always works. One click downloads your full encrypted record in a documented format. The decryption recipe (Argon2id → AES-256-GCM, parameters included in the file) is published, so any competent engineer — or future tool — can open it with your passphrase, without us.
- If we wind down, you get at least 90 days' notice on email and in the product, with step-by-step migration instructions. No silent shutdowns, no surprise data deletion.
- The client goes open-source. If Lyfos ceases operating, the vault client's source code is released publicly so the community can keep it running. We are preparing the crypto client for public release ahead of 1.0 — verifiability should not depend on our survival.
- Releases in flight complete. Any recovery already past its 14-day hold completes before anything is turned off. A family mid-recovery is the last thing we would ever abandon.
Why we can promise this.
Most companies can't make these promises because their product stops working without their servers. Lyfos was built local-first on purpose: the encryption happens on your device, the keys never leave you, and the cloud only ever holds ciphertext. Continuity isn't a policy we adopted — it falls out of the architecture. The same design that means we can't read your vault also means we can't take it with us.
What this charter is not.
It's not a guarantee that Lyfos-the-service runs forever — no honest company can promise that. It's a guarantee that your data's fate is decoupled from ours: whatever happens to us, your records stay yours, readable, and recoverable by the people you chose.
